AT LOTUS CHILDCARE CENTER,
PARENTS LEND A HAND
Eight years ago, corporate division of Lotus Development Corp. opened the Lotus Childcare Center for
the children of its employees. On a typical day at the facility, you'll find up
to seventy infants and preschoolers enjoying the
centers stimulating activities.
To enter the facility, Lotus employees and visitors formerly had to swipe a proximity card past a reader at the front door. Lotus soon realized that
the card-reader system created a problem for non-employees, who were unable to
enter without
undergoing the time-consuming process of applying for a pass card.
To eliminate this bottleneck, Lotus installed an RSI HandKey® biometric device.
Visiting parents can now take a
few minutes to enroll with the system, then punch in a short code and place a
hand in the unit. In less than a second, the HandKey checks over 90 hand dimensions,
including lengths, widths, thicknesses, and surface areas, and verifies that the hand
in the unit belongs
to a parent who's enrolled. Once the parent's identity is confirmed, the standalone system
opens the door.
Judy Kilgore, the center's director, says, "The hand reader works really well, providing an extra barrier of protection for
our children. Just as important, our
non-Lotus parents no longer feel excluded."
